This excellent video provides an in-depth explanation of how hydraulic handbrakes work: There’s no shortage of names given to hydraulic handbrakes, so whether you’ve heard about a hydro, hydro brake, e-brake, wand, or another variation, they’re going to be exactly the same. If you’re lucky enough to be getting a lot of seat time, the chances are that you’re already bored of fixing and replacing your tired handbrake cables, and your time is going to far better spent with little extra cash and a few hours of your time installing the hydraulic alternative. On the other hand, hydraulic systems rely on fluid for pressure, which provides far superior performance than your standard setup. Other benefits of switching are that the traditional handbrake operates on a cable, and over time, especially when used in anger, that cable will end up stretching and potentially snapping… Repeatedly. Sure, the stock handbrake in your car may well be adequate for your needs when kicking the back end out in a parking lot, but when it comes to tricky initiations at the track, a hydraulic handbrake is definitely going to be the perfect add-on to maximize your potential. You’ve no doubt found your way here as you’re planning to install one of the most essential upgrades to a well-prepared drift car. I was thinking of reinforcing the bracket to get the handbrake to work better.OBP Motorsport Pro-Drift V3 Lockable Hydraulic Handbrake Also have a look at second hand brake calipers and find me a set of calipers with a straight bracket. One thing I noticed, is how much the cable brackets on the rear calipers bend when you apply the handbrake. With these cars being 20 years old and having people work on the hydraulics, I like having a set of mechanical cables for emergencies.īut still I think the handbrake on the spyder is really weak. I once had a brake line burst on me and the emergency brakes saved me from a wreck. Personally, I prefer to have cables, because it offers you braking capability in case you run into a terminal hydraulic issue. If that would be the case you also have the choice of locking the front wheels, like a line lock.Īnd do the inline handbrake handles have a latch inside? I think drift handbrakes usally lack a latch. So one master cylinder circuit does both front brakes and one master cylinder circuit does the rears? They are not cross linked? Pass through hydraulic single channel piston (0.75” preferred for minimal throw) Ok, now that that is out of the way here are some details regarding common fittings and missing information (or unconfirmed) that is needed to make this a more easy install. If you do you, your passengers and bystanders may die in a fiery death. ![]() You should NOT install one of these devices under any circumstances. By no means do I recommend or suggest you do something like this to your car. Of course this is for an off road demonstration only. However, I think a few members and maybe would be willing to share findings while hardware is installed. Unfortunately, it appears people are stingy with their hydrobrake information. So, the connection in a W30 is somewhat different. However, for our improved safety and braking application we wish to retain the four channel ABS capability. This is common practice for drift cars but their application is different and usually the ABS is bypassed. To remedy both of these issues some owners have fitted hydraulic hand brakes in place of the cable brakes. Some upgrade only the front brakes leading to an unsafe situation with far too much front bias. Some people wish to upgrade to big brake kits only to find out that they will no longer have an emergency brake or parking brake. Many W30 owners constantly deal with adjustment or failing handbrake systems in our cars. ![]()
